How to Remove Wallpaper
Tips and Tricks for Removing Wallpaper
Fabric-Backed Vinyl Wallpaper Removal
To remove fabric-backed vinyl, you can pull on the paper and it should come off in one strip. A glue residue will remain on the wall, which needs to be removed before you re-wallpaper or paint.
Prepasted Wallpaper Removal
Removing prepasted wallpaper is a more tedious project, and there are many different techniques that can be effective:
- Moisten the paper with hot water
- Mix vinegar with the hot water
- Mix fabric softener with the hot water
- Mix a marketed wallpaper removal product with the hot water
- Use a wallpaper steamer to put moist heat on the paper
The key is to first get the walls good and wet. Using a utility blade, you can then loosen a corner of the paper and pull it off the wall. The paper will peel off like sunburned skin. Prepasted paper usually comes off in two layers, the print you’re wanting to remove and a backing paper.
Removing paper is not usually difficult, but it takes time, patience and it makes a mess. If the paper comes off without damaging the walls, you can count your blessings.
